When the trains stopped coming Hachiko returned home but like clockwork returned to the train station, at the same time that Professor Ueno should be returning home, tail wagging in anticipation of his companion getting off the train.
Ueno did not return home. Ueno’s former gardener Kozaburo brought Hachiko to his house to provide him with a new home. However, Hachiko continued to return to the train station to wait for his beloved companion each day, just as they had done together for so many years.
News of Hachiko’s unwavering loyalty spread, capturing the hearts of the people of Tokyo and beyond. The station staff, commuters, and even passersby were touched by Hachiko’s devotion. They began to leave food and water for him, providing him solace during his long wait. Hachiko became a symbol of love, loyalty, and dedication that resonated deeply with dog owners everywhere.
Hachiko returned to that train station every single day for the next 9 years, 9 months, and 15 days awaiting Ueno’s return until March 8th, 1935 when Hachiko died.

The entrance near the statue was named “Hachiko-guchi”, which means “The Hachiko Entrance”. In 2004 another statue of Hachiko was created and put in front of the Akita Dog Museum. In 2015 the University of Tokyo unveiled a bronze statue of Ueno returning from work to meet a very excited Hachiko.
Hachiko and Ueno’s story has since inspired several books, cartoons, and even movies.

As a dog dad this story really changed my outlook. To some of us, our dogs are as precious as our children and are loved just as much. With human children, it is tragic if the child dies before the parent. With dog children, it’s almost certain to be the case. With my dog Charlie being 10 years old I fear losing him one day. However, with this story, I now fear leaving him first. As a human, I can make sense of what has happened and I can go through the grieving process. I would not want Charlie to wait and wonder for the rest of his life. I’ll take away from this story to just enjoy every day I can with him and all of my loved ones as we never know when someone might not get off that train.
